Last week, I had the opportunity to present and participate at the Southwestern School for Behavioral Studies in Phoenix, Arizona. This trip was not just another conference; it was a chance to (once again) meet in person with my virtual consultation team of four years, all of us dedicated DBT therapists.
Presenting on Anticholinergic Toxicity: A Hidden Risk
I was honored to present on a topic very important to me: “The Hidden Risk of Overdose: Clinical Assessment of Anticholinergic Toxicity and Burden.” This issue became deeply personal after I experienced a dangerous drug interaction that led to anticholinergic toxicity. My goal is to prevent this from happening to others, and it was incredible to see the room packed with engaged clinicians eager to learn.
Even when I delved into the neurobiology of acetylcholine and cholinergic medications—a subject that had eyes glazing over—I encouraged everyone to stick with me. By the end, the audience was not only able to answer my questions but demonstrated a strong understanding of the topic. Knowing that this knowledge could save lives was a profound experience.
Expanding Knowledge on PTSD, OCD, Grief, and Neurodivergence
In addition to presenting, I attended seminars on PTSD, OCD, grief, and neurodivergence, including ADHD and autism. The diversity of topics was enriching, and it felt good to be in an environment where everyone was as passionate about these subjects as I am.
Experiencing Phoenix and Networking with Colleagues
Phoenix was beautiful, albeit extremely hot, but the real highlight was the time spent with my colleagues. Staying at a beautiful hotel, we enjoyed the pool and took a trip to the local aquarium, which was a delightful experience. There’s something special about meeting again in person after years of virtual collaboration, and it made me appreciate the connections we’ve built over time.
Reflecting on the Conference
While I’m happy to be back home with my pets, I already miss the daily interactions with my colleagues. This trip has left me feeling motivated and ready to grow my business! It has also reminded me of the immense value of in-person continuing education. There’s no substitute for the connections made and the depth of understanding gained when you’re in the same room with other passionate professionals. I strongly encourage other mental health clinicians to step away from their screens and engage in these opportunities in person—it’s worth every moment. I also look forward to reading David Kessler’s book “Finding Meaning” after his great talk on grief.
I’m also excited to prepare for my next talk, “Empowering Neurodivergent Minds,” which focuses on the financial impact of ADHD. Participants will learn strategies to gain control over their finances and work towards financial well-being.
